Sunday evening, while spending time in the community of eikon that meets in my friend Mark's home, we discussed Rob Bells' "Rich" video. It is difficult for us to remember that the world we live in, the suburban, urban, or rural American world we live in is not THE world. It is so easy for us to get caught up in our culture without even seeing it. I think Christians are called to stand against the Empire of their times, whether it be Ceaser or Wal Mart and pristine resource consuming lawns. How do we do it, how do we change our hearts? I think a beginning could be found in the words of Br. Thomas Merton
"Your life is shaped by the ends you live for. You are made in the image of what you desire."
What do we live for, what do we desire? I am trying to take a look at my life, perhaps it is more visible than I realized. As we look forward to the Incarnation, maybe we can look at how we are living that out and being a dissedent in our own American Christian Empire.
