In exploring how people apply a Rule to their lives, I wanted to share how Kerry developed this for himself. He commented here on the blog, and is exploring the Rule of St Benedict.
He bases his personal Rule on 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12, which reads ...
"Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life and attend to your own business and work with your hands, just as we commanded you, so that you will behave properly toward outsiders and not be in any need."
Then he asked himself the following questions.
1) How do I live this rule for myself personally?
2) How would this rule be lived by a group or a small community?
These are powerful questions which he answers Here. I would like to hear from those who would consider those questions in their own life. I am curious how Rivendell or any other Emergent community could apply those questions to their intentional community, since they were discussing a Rule, lately.
After reading Kerry's post, I am encouraged to realize that, even though I am married with children :o) that it is possible to move in the direction of a more contemplative life. Having raised four children in my younger life, and now raising two beautiful adopted daughters from China, my life has been a never-ending adventure of noise, confusion, and distractions. But I hope that I am learning to take the small moments of quiet to immerse my mind and soul in the ancient truths of this lifestyle. And a focus on living a life that is quiet (as much as possible under the circumstances!) and focused, with structure and a rhythm for prayer and meditation - that sounds so appealing to me, especially in the midst of all of the activity around me. I must find that place of peace here in my home and in my heart. Thank you for the words of wisdom, encouragement, and guidance. Nina
