I visited a Benedictine monastery last week in Oklahoma and while our group was there we spoke with a sister there for a little while. She spoke of something that came out of Vatican II that seemed to really please her. The way she put it was that Vatican II did not make the monasteries irrelevant, on the contrary Vatican II opened the monastic life to all Christians everywhere, since as you noted the monastic life is simply an attempt to live the life of faith.

There is much we can learn from the faithful who chose/choose this life, as well as the realization that we are all called to a life of discipline and commitment.
